Overturning the “destructive” model, a new era of tumor treatment model

“The most beautiful words in the world are not ‘I love you’, but ‘your tumor is benign’. This is a joke, but it reflects the world’s fear of malignant tumor, and the root of the fear is that it is about life and the incurability of most malignant tumors; however, since this century, the “rising sun” of multiple treatment means is promoting the change of tumor treatment mode. Before the 1980s, tumor treatment was based on “single ‘destructive’ treatment” as the main treatment mode, mainly including surgical resection, systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In the 1980s, tumor treatment mainly consisted of surgical resection, systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Under certain historical conditions, it brought “gospel” to tumor patients at that time and played an important role in prolonging patients’ lives and improving their quality of life. However, the traditional tumor treatment mode also has disadvantages such as single treatment method and simple and rough treatment: the indications for surgical resection are narrow and traumatic; systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy have disadvantages such as long cycle time, high cost and inaccurate efficacy. In addition, chemotherapy is more harmful to the internal environment, while radiotherapy can bring more serious tissue damage. Since the 21st century, “minimally invasive” and “bio-immune” treatments for tumors are on the rise. “The new tumor treatment mode of “high-efficiency, low-toxicity systemic treatment + local minimally invasive tumor treatment” has taken shape. From minimally invasive surgery and image-guided minimally invasive treatment to systemic treatment such as bioimmunotherapy and targeted treatment, the treatment effect has been enhanced while trying to overcome the drawbacks of traditional treatment mode. In summary, modern treatment modalities for tumors are divided into “three levels”, involving the whole body, organs and local tumors. We found that the mainstay of modern tumor treatment is still at the organ level and local level, while the whole-body treatment is still developing vigorously as the hope and ultimate direction for curing tumors. Therefore, the mainstream treatment mode in modern clinical practice is the introduction of image-guided minimally invasive treatment under the three major modes of surgical resection, systemic drug therapy and radiotherapy (different from the traditional three magic weapons), including ablation, particle implantation, vascular embolization and intracavitary stenting. Modern mainstream treatment modes of tumors In fact, there is no best but only the most suitable among the many treatment options for tumors. Therefore, the treatment of tumor should be individualized and integrated according to the patient’s disease condition, in order to achieve the ultimate goal of “low toxicity and high efficiency”.
