Post-breast cancer hand swelling, most often caused by impaired lymphatic return, is most easily treated by increasing arm movement.
When edema occurs in the arm due to impaired lymphatic return after surgery, you can start with a moderate amount of arm exercise to promote lymphatic return. When edema is already occurring in the arm, it is important not to expose the arm to direct heat, like a hot bath, because the edema will be more intense when exposed to heat. If the swelling has just started, it can still subside by taking massage, using elastic bandage, eating diuretic and anti-swelling medicine in time. When arm edema occurs, you should see a specialist promptly.
