Chickenpox is a viral infection that can also manifest itself in blood work. In severe cases of chickenpox, with little or no fever, the white blood cell count may be normal or slightly low. The neutrophil count will be in the normal range and the lymphocyte count may be slightly elevated. When chickenpox patients have severe fever or bacterial infection, the white blood cell count may be significantly higher. The lymphocyte count can also be increased in the classification, and the neutrophil count can be significantly increased when accompanied by bacterial infection. The neutrophil count in viral infections is maintained in the normal range, but in secondary bacterial infections, the neutrophil count can be elevated more significantly. In particularly severe cases of chickenpox, platelets may also be significantly depleted, resulting in a decrease in platelets.
