Age-related macular degeneration in Chinese ophthalmology, the preferred treatment for eye diseases

Age-related macular degeneration, mostly develops over the age of 50 years, both eyes are affected successively or simultaneously, and the visual acuity shows progressive damage, and the incidence increases with age. Clinically, there are two types of macular degeneration: atrophic macular degeneration and exudative macular degeneration. Atrophic macular degeneration has a slow onset, with gradual loss of vision in both eyes, mostly accompanied by visual distortion; exudative macular degeneration has a sudden decline in the affected eye, with visual distortion or central dark spot. It is important to diagnose the disease in time and treat it early. Chinese ophthalmology believes that the earlier the macular degeneration is treated, the better the effect. Atrophic macular degeneration is better treated by TCM, and the current treatment is mainly based on Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture. Exudative macular degeneration is mostly treated with anti-VEGF therapy, which can be combined with traditional Chinese medicine to enhance the efficacy.
