How long to take omeprazole for reflux esophagitis

There is no uniform clinical requirement for how long patients with reflux esophagitis need to take omeprazole. Depending on the patient’s specific situation, it is usually 4-8 weeks, but for patients with severe esophagitis and combined esophageal hiatal hernia, the duration of medication needs to be extended appropriately. Reflux esophagitis is an inflammatory esophageal lesion caused by the reflux of stomach and duodenal contents into the esophagus. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that can effectively inhibit gastric acid secretion and rapidly improve the symptoms of reflux esophagitis. In addition to taking omeprazole, patients should usually pay attention to the fact that they should not lie down immediately after eating, should not eat 2 hours before bedtime, avoid coffee, strong tea, chocolate, etc., abstain from smoking and alcohol, and reduce factors that cause increased intra-abdominal pressure, such as constipation and obesity, all of which can help relieve reflux esophagitis. In addition, if the symptoms of reflux and heartburn do not improve significantly after 8 weeks of standardized treatment with omeprazole, it is necessary to visit the gastroenterology department again and adjust the treatment plan under the guidance of a professional doctor.
