The first thing you need to do is to take a look at the patient’s life. (1) Esophageal stricture Esophageal stricture often occurs in the esophagus near the cardia and is caused by scarring of the esophagus. Many people have one or two large or small scars on the surface of the body, which are traces left after the skin has broken down. When the mucosal erosion or ulcer of reflux esophagitis heals, it also produces scarring. Moreover, due to the repeated attacks of mucosal erosion and ulcer of esophagus, multiple scarring is left on the mucosa, and these scarring makes the esophageal wall thicken significantly. With the prolongation of the disease and the increase of the scar, the stricture becomes more and more serious and the symptoms become more and more obvious. Therefore, dysphagia in reflux esophagitis is different from dysphagia in gastroesophageal reflux. In the former, the sensation of dysphagia persists and gradually worsens, while in the latter, dysphagia occurs intermittently and sometimes. (2) Bleeding When erosion or ulceration of the esophageal mucosa affects the blood vessels, it will destroy the vessel wall and cause bleeding. A small amount of bleeding will only cause a positive fecal occult blood test, but if the amount of bleeding is large, vomiting of blood will occur. (3) Esophageal cancer The cells on the mucosal surface of the normal lower esophagus are flattened, medically known as squamous epithelium. If the flattened cells become columnar cells, this type of esophagus is called Barrett’s esophagus. In patients with reflux esophagitis, the mucous membrane of the esophagus is irritated by refluxed material for a long time and can gradually develop into Barrett’s esophagus. The more severe the reflux, the longer the length of the esophagus where the Barrett’s esophagus lesion occurs. Barrett’s esophagus is recognized as a lesion of esophageal cancer, and the incidence of esophageal cancer in patients with Barrett’s esophagus is 30 to 52 times higher than that of the general population. Reflux esophagitis brings a lot of harm to the body, so when the condition is found, it is necessary to go to the hospital for timely treatment. In normal life, you must pay attention to develop good living habits and quit smoking and drinking to reduce the occurrence of the disease.
