Reflux esophagitis is a special kind of esophagitis, a disease that occurs when food flows from the intestine back into the esophagus. Because reflux esophagitis is a disease that we encounter less often, many people may not understand it very well, so below we will introduce you to the disease symptoms of reflux esophagitis. 1. Burning sensation or pain behind the sternum is the main symptom of this disease. Depending on the distribution of the vagus nerve, it can sometimes radiate to the neck, palate or ear. It is common to radiate to both sides of the back between the scapulae. The burning sensation can be relieved by drinking water or taking acidulants or sugar cubes to stimulate salivation and primary peristalsis of the esophagus. It is most likely to occur especially after eating certain spicy foods, and can be caused by bending, straining or lying down, and is relieved in the upright position, which is due to the action of taking an upright position to walk around to promote esophageal clearance. Increased postural burning pain is highly suggestive of reflux. In the case of acid deficiency, the burning sensation is mainly caused by bile reflux, and the effect of taking acid suppressants is not effective. The severity of the burning sensation does not necessarily correspond to the severity of the lesion. In severe esophagitis, especially in those with scar formation, there may be no or only a slight burning sensation. 2. Gastric and esophageal reflux Every time there is acidic fluid or food reflux from the stomach and esophagus to the pharynx or mouth after a meal, when the body is lying in forward bending or when sleeping in bed at night. This symptom mostly appears before the occurrence of burning sensation or burning pain behind the sternum. 3. Painful swallowing is caused by food masses irritating the inflamed esophagus or esophageal spasm. The spasmodic pain has the same distribution and radiation site as heartburn. The food mass causes acute dilatation of the esophagus in the area of esophagitis and part of the stenosis or motor incoordination area, and a third contraction or spasm occurs. The patient may feel food or liquid stagnate above the esophagus and have to wait for the food mass to travel downward or drink water to wash down. The dilated esophagus above the food mass stagnation can produce very severe pain. Spasmodic pain can also be caused by reflux. 4, dysphagia at the beginning can often be caused by esophagitis secondary to esophageal spasm and intermittent dysphagia. In the later stage, it can be replaced by permanent dysphagia due to narrowing of the esophageal scar formation, burning sensation and burning pain, and blockage sensation or pain at the glabella when eating solid food. Because we cannot see the symptoms of reflux esophagitis inside the body, we can only determine reflux esophagitis by the external symptoms. After you know these symptoms of reflux esophagitis, you will be able to determine reflux esophagitis in time when it occurs.
