What are the complications of diabetes?

Complications of diabetes mellitus mainly include acute severe metabolic disorders, infectious diseases and chronic complications.
1. Acute severe metabolic disorder: refers to diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic syndrome, which can be induced by infection, interruption of insulin treatment or improper reduction of insulin dosage, surgery, alcoholism, etc., and requires timely rehydration and insulin treatment.
2. Infectious diseases: diabetic patients with decreased resistance are prone to various infectious diseases, such as boils, carbuncles, athlete’s foot, pyelonephritis, etc. Anti-infectious treatment should be carried out, while actively controlling blood sugar.
3. Chronic complications: Chronic complications of diabetes mellitus mainly include microangiopathy (diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy), atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, diabetic neuropathy and so on.
