Recognizing necrotizing fasciitis

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare necrotizing soft tissue infection. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, patients often die from sepsis and toxemia, with a mortality rate of 30% or more. The disease is characterized by an acute onset, malignant fever, rapid progression, dangerous condition, and extensive tissue necrosis. Early and extensive multi-incisional drainage and complete removal of necrotic tissue are the key measures for the treatment of the disease. Adequate and effective antibiotics are given after surgery, and combined medication is given when necessary. The results of bacterial culture and drug sensitivity test at the infection site provide the basis for the correct selection and rational application of antibiotics. Due to the nature of necrotizing fasciitis, the combination of drugs on the basis of thorough debridement can control the infection faster and more effectively. In addition, active treatment of the primary disease (such as diabetes), correction of water-electrolyte and acid-base balance disorders, replenishment of blood volume and other symptomatic treatment; at the same time, systemic nutritional support therapy is also the main part of treatment, which is the premise of improving the efficacy of antibiotics against pathogenic bacteria and promoting the healing of surgical wounds. Moreover, the important role of postoperative dressing change should not be neglected to keep the wound drainage unobstructed and avoid pseudo-healing of the wound. In addition the application of TCM can effectively shorten the healing process.
