1. Why do I need blepharoplasty?
Heavy eyelids (double eyelids) give people a sense of flexibility, brightness, and clarity, while single eyelids (single eyelids) make people feel small and lifeless, which is why many people, especially young people, request blepharoplasty.
2. Who can have blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is the most common cosmetic surgery today, and can be performed on people with single eyelids, droopy eyelids or ingrown eyelashes. However, surgery must be individualized and cannot be forced to be consistent. It should be decided based on the individual’s face and eye shape as well as their temperament, aesthetic situation, and length of recovery time. Therefore, before doing double eyelid, you should fully discuss and negotiate with the doctor to have a correct judgment of the post-operative appearance.
3.What kind of preparation must be done before surgery?
Patients should avoid menstruation, preferably in the middle of two periods; no allergies or inflammation in the eyes or face; if you are taking aspirin or other medications that affect blood clotting, it is best to stop taking them a week in advance if they do not affect the effectiveness of the original disease; no smoking or alcohol before or after surgery; and cleanse your face well before surgery and do not use cosmetics.
4. What are the common methods of blepharoplasty and what are their advantages and disadvantages?
Cosmetic blepharoplasty is divided into the buried wire method and the incision method.
Advantages of the buried wire method: no visible skin scar after surgery, no need to remove stitches, quick recovery, and other post-operative modalities are available for correction if the procedure is not ideal.
Disadvantages: narrow scope of application, suitable for young people with thin eyelids, some blepharoplasties can fade naturally or have exposed nodes; incisional method, which involves cutting the upper lid skin to create anatomically similar fiber adhesions to the natural blepharoplasty. This method is suitable for any type of single eyelid, especially for older patients with lax and hypertrophic upper eyelids and those who have high aesthetic requirements and require a longer postoperative eyelid retention. The disadvantage is that the stitches need to be removed after surgery, some patients have long swelling, the lids are unnatural in the near future, and the scar of the incision line can be seen and takes 3-6 weeks to fade.
5. Is the procedure painful?
Blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia and the pain during surgery is mainly from the eyelid anesthetic injection, but not during surgery.
6. What is the post-operative care?
After surgery, appropriate pressure bandages and cold compresses are usually applied, and exercise, head bowing, and breath holding should be avoided to prevent rebleeding after surgery. In principle, ice packs can be applied within 24-48 hours. The dressing can be removed on the second day after surgery to clean the wound and eye secretions to facilitate the best healing of the wound.
7.How to deal with postoperative swelling and when will the swelling go down?
Due to intraoperative or postoperative blood leakage, some patients may also experience localized bruising, which is normal and can generally subside on its own in one to two weeks. We recommend that patients reduce eye use, sleep with the head elevated, and apply local pressure to reduce eyelid swelling, but review the swelling promptly if it becomes severe and worsens. The time for swelling and bruising to subside depends on the individual’s body type and condition, and generally ranges from 2 weeks to 2 months, although it may take longer for older patients.
9.When will the stitches be removed? Is it painful?
The stitches are removed 5-7 days after surgery. The removal of the stitches is not as scary as some patients may think. There is no special sensation when the stitches are removed on the outside and middle of the eyelid, but the pain is slightly stronger on the inside of the eyelid.
10.What are the possible unsatisfactory situations after eyelid surgery? How to choose the time to repair again?
Possible unsatisfactory situations after double eyelid surgery are
① Asymmetry of the heavy lids.
②The eyelid line is too wide or too narrow.
③Subcutaneous nodules.
④short eyelid line, forming a half double eyelid.
⑤ triple eyelids.
(6) triangular eyes, etc.
Except in cases of severe eyelid closure, all patients should be considered for corrective surgery six months to one year after surgery and after the scar has softened. If surgery is performed before the scar has softened, the tissue is fragile and can easily tear, resulting in scar formation, which can affect the outcome of the surgery.
