Excimer laser less risky than contact lenses

Recently, the safety of “laser myopia correction surgery” has been fired up. on February 26, the Ophthalmology Branch of China Medical Doctors Association (CMA) held a symposium in Beijing, where more than ten experts in excimer laser surgery and keratoconus disease expressed their insights from both academic and professional perspectives. Prof. Zhao Jialiang, president of the Ophthalmologists Branch of the Chinese Physicians Association, pointed out that the risk of laser orthodontics is much lower than that of contact lenses. At the meeting, Prof. Zhao pointed out that both frame glasses, contact lenses and laser myopia correction have different levels of risk for patients, and it is up to the patients themselves to choose which way to treat and correct myopia. From the current point of view, the corneal damage and complications caused by contact lenses are much higher than myopia correction surgery. He mentioned that at present, China’s myopia correction surgery technology and safety standards are in sync with the advanced level of foreign countries. Before the meeting, Xie Lixin, the only academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in China’s ophthalmology sector, publicly said that in recent years, the annual average number of eye laser surgeries around the world has exceeded one million, and that the results of the surgeries are overwhelmingly good, with individual post-operative complications falling within the scope of controllable risks. In August 2011, the Ministry of Health issued a regulation entitled “Quality Control of Excimer Laser Corneal Refractive Surgery,” which was mandated to be implemented as of February 2012, and in February 2012, the Ministry of Health issued a regulation entitled “Quality Control of Laser Corneal Refractive Surgery. As one of the authors of the regulation, Prof. Sun Tong of Aier Ophthalmology revealed that Aier Ophthalmology has been implementing the Quality Control of Excimer Laser Keratomileusis since 2009, and can be said to be the earliest medical institution in China to comply with the regulation in performing excimer laser corneal refractive surgery. According to Sun Tong, for those who want to remove their glasses through laser corneal myopia surgery, the following six conditions must be in place to ensure the quality of the surgery: comprehensive and correct preoperative examination, experienced surgical practice, skilled surgeons, internationally advanced equipment, professional surgical methods and standardized postoperative medication and follow-up visits.
