How much do you know about pediatric tumors?

With the decline of child mortality caused by infectious and traumatic diseases, oncological diseases in children (0-18 years old, narrowly defined as 0-14 years old) have become the leading cause of death in children. The incidence of childhood cancer accounts for about two percent of the incidence of cancer in the whole population. With the sound and complete tumor registration system and the improvement of diagnosis level, the incidence of childhood tumors in China is on the rise. Childhood cancer and adult cancer have different pathogenesis mechanisms, different disease spectrum and different treatment, and the treatment of growing children has its special characteristics. Pediatric oncology is a special specialty and treatment of pediatric oncology requires specialist and multidisciplinary collaboration and is usually done in pediatric specialty hospitals and general hospitals with well-established pediatric and oncology specialty platforms. In the United States, although the incidence of pediatric oncology is increasing at an average rate of 0.6% per year, with the rapid improvement in the specialization and diagnosis and treatment of pediatric oncology, the mortality rate of pediatric oncology has decreased by more than 50% in the past 35 years, and the five-year survival rate of pediatric cancer is over 86%. Due to the lack of pediatricians in China and the extremely low degree of specialization in pediatric cancer, the survival rate of children with cancer in China is far below the level of developed countries, and the public and even medical personnel do not know enough about this specialty, and still talk about cancer in children. Children are the hope of families, and the treatment of pediatric tumors involves complex family social and psychological issues, which requires full management and systematic planning. Shengjing Hospital, affiliated with China Medical University, has national key disciplines of pediatrics and pediatric surgery and a 500-bed oncology treatment center and multidisciplinary platform. In recent years, we have accumulated rich clinical experience in the field of comprehensive treatment of pediatric tumors, treating pediatric tumor patients from the three northeastern provinces and Inner Mongolia and the whole country, and have sent personnel to study abroad, forming the distinctive disciplinary advantages of pediatric tumors. Therefore, we intend to do more work in the field of pediatric tumor specialty and make more contributions to promote the development of pediatric tumor specialty in China and improve the health of children in our province.
