Does cervical prolapse require surgery?

Not all cases of cervical prolapse require surgical treatment. Surgical treatment is mainly indicated for symptomatic patients who have failed non-surgical treatment or who do not wish to be treated non-surgically, and may be considered for patients with prolapse beyond the hymen.
There is no evidence that surgery is beneficial in asymptomatic patients and there are risks associated with surgery. For patients for whom surgical treatment is necessary, the surgeon will choose the procedure after full communication with the patient and family, guided by a holistic theory that takes into account the patient’s age, wishes, type and degree of anatomical defect, and the surgeon’s own experienced skills in making decisions.
