Exercise during post-operative recovery from esophageal cancer should be noted

Exercise often during the recovery period of esophageal cancer can speed up the metabolism, make the body cells more active, and relax the mood as well. However, we must pay attention to the amount of strength. Postoperative activities are divided into bed activities and out-of-bed activities. The first two days after surgery, bed activities are the main activities, including sitting up, back patting, upper and lower limb activities, etc. When moving, attention should be paid to protect the infusion lines from falling off, and to keep the pipeline open. On the third day after surgery, patients can get out of bed, which can not only increase lung capacity, keep the trachea open and reduce pulmonary complications, but also help to promote blood circulation, prevent the formation of venous thrombosis and promote the recovery of gastrointestinal function. Patients’ worries should be eliminated, early activities will not affect wound healing, and will not cause wound dehiscence. Early activity out of bed after esophageal cancer surgery has many benefits, which can not only improve respiratory and circulatory functions, prevent complications such as pulmonary infection, pulmonary atelectasis and thrombosis, but also enhance appetite and restore gastrointestinal function as soon as possible. It is important to take precautionary measures when moving around, such as fixing various pipelines on the body, and once there are uncomfortable symptoms such as dizziness, panic and shortness of breath, go to bed to rest in time, and notify the medical staff as soon as possible in serious cases. In the first three days after surgery, patients can stand, step in place and walk around the bed with the help of others, and then gradually increase the range of activities and the amount of activities. Patients should not engage in high-intensity exercise, such as ball games, swimming, mountain climbing, etc., for a short period of time after discharge from the hospital, but should start with slow dancing, walking, tai chi, etc., and gradually increase the amount of exercise. The amount of exercise should be increased gradually, depending on the recovery of individual body. During the recovery period of esophageal cancer, patients should be advised to quit smoking and alcohol, to carry out appropriate activities, to pay attention to the nutrition diet, to avoid stimulating food, to maintain oral hygiene, to rinse the mouth after meals, and to pay attention to regular review.
