Over the last 20 years, cancer has been on the rise globally with an aging population, the proliferation of Western-style diets, the increasing consumption of tobacco, and environmental changes. It has been 50 years since the world tried to work together to aggressively deal with cancer, and huge amounts of money have been spent, resulting in more and more oncology patients instead of fewer. A scholar in the United States predicts that 40 percent of people alive today will be diagnosed with some form of cancer at some point in their lives; by 2010, that number will rise to 50 percent. The National Center for Disease Control has predicted that if the average life expectancy in the United States reaches 90 years, 47% of men will eventually die of cancer and 32% of women. All this increases the fear of tumors in humans. In fact, based on new research findings, there is a growing tendency to conclude that the occurrence of cancer is a physiological phenomenon that accompanies the continuation of life. In most cases, it is inseparable from aging and is an unavoidable consequence of the aging process, so precancerous lesions or tumors are common in the elderly. In other cases, cancer is a physiological abnormality induced by genetic mutations or the repeated effects of inflammation and various harmful stimuli (such as tobacco, alcohol, radiation, etc.), and is an abnormality that appears in advance. The tumor problem is a major problem in the world, which is not only medical but also social and common to all human beings. In the past, human beings were overconfident and single-mindedly tried to conquer cancer and took many extreme measures. However, the results were chilling. Therefore, since the latter part of the 20th century, people began to review and reflect on the strategic model of cancer prevention and treatment. This coincided with the rapid development of modern high technology and the rise of a new wave of humanism worldwide during the same period, which gave rise to the call for a change in the medical paradigm and the medical concept was undergoing a change. In relation to this, it is emphasized that the same needs to be done for the prevention and treatment of tumors, and that strategies need to be adjusted and ideas and concepts need to be changed. It is believed that with this change in mindset, there will be more hope for humanity in dealing with tumors. More than ten years have passed, the latest data released by the American Society of Oncology shows that the 5-year survival rate of cancer patients after treatment has reached more than 65% on average; in some economically developed provinces and cities in China, the 5-year survival rate of cancer patients after treatment has also reached more than 35%, which provides the possibility of treating cancer as a chronic disease. People are more and more convinced that the combination of Chinese and Western medicine treatment by using modern medical technology to keep the lesion at a stable level and reduce its damage to the body so that the disease does not develop will probably be the most beneficial, least damaging and thus the most feasible method in tumor treatment. In view of the progress and new understanding, the World Health Organization (WHO) has defined cancer as a chronic disease since 2006. The former “terminal disease”, cancer (malignant tumor), has been renamed as a chronic disease. A chronic disease is a disease with slow pathological changes, a long course of disease and cannot be cured in the short term or for life. Many people may still remember that decades ago hypertensive encephalopathy and diabetic hyperosmolar coma could take life quickly, and the situation at that time was the same as people’s fear of tumor now. Many hypertensive and diabetic patients have survived for a long time. It is believed that one day people will realize that tumor is not a hideous demon. At present, through multidisciplinary treatment and scientific and reasonable diagnosis and treatment, the survival rate of three and five years has been greatly improved. Don’t be frightened if you suffer from tumor, but go to a specialized hospital with conditions, experts will carefully explain and patiently guide you, and can formulate a reasonable and scientific treatment plan. Believe in science, the efficacy is much improved and the toxic side effects are much less than before. Believe in the development of medicine, tumor is not untreatable, it belongs to a kind of chronic disease!
