Men beware of thyroid problems

According to statistics, about 2 million people suffer from hypothyroidism (hypothyroidism) worldwide, with India accounting for about 420,000 patients. A new study found that men are at greatest risk of developing hypothyroidism between the ages of 31 and 45, according to a recent report in The Times of India. The new three-year survey was completed by SRL Diagnostics India, a Singapore-based company, between 2012 and 2014. The new survey found that the prevalence of hypothyroidism is now 22.68 percent of the Indian population, who also have a variety of conditions such as heart disease and infertility. The eastern region of India has the highest prevalence of hypothyroidism at 25.2%, while the northern and western regions have 23.9% and 21.1%, respectively. Southern India had the lowest prevalence of hypothyroidism, at 19.4 percent. Dr. B.R. Deiss, head of research and innovation at SRL Diagnostics, said it is important for more people to understand the causes, symptoms, treatment and testing of thyroid disorders, the researchers said. In India, problems related to abnormal thyroid hormone production continue to increase, and awareness of thyroid disorders in men is alarmingly low. A recent survey completed by the Thyroid Association of India shows that thyroid disorders are located ninth in the ranking of various disease awareness, well below common diseases such as asthma, cholesterol problems, depression, diabetes, insomnia and heart disease. Researchers urge patients at high risk for thyroid disease to be actively screened for endocrine function, have their thyroid health checked regularly, and adjust and refine more effective treatments in a timely manner.
