Can otitis media cause a sore throat?

When a patient has otitis media, it does not usually lead to a sore throat, but on the contrary, a sore throat may lead to otitis media. When acute inflammation or infection occurs in the throat, inflammatory factors may enter the middle ear retrograde through the eustachian tube, leading to acute inflammation of the middle ear, causing severe ear pain and even suppurative infection of the middle ear, resulting in perforation of the eardrum and pus in the ear. Some patients may also suffer from inflammatory factors in the pharynx, causing dysfunction of the eustachian tube, which may further lead to the development of secretory otitis media, causing ear congestion, ear blockage, hearing loss and tinnitus.
