What to eat and what not to eat for tumor patients

Tumor patients are generally very concerned about what they should and should not eat during their consultation. Some of them also specifically mention whether they need to take supplements or nutrients. As a TCM oncology physician and second level nutritionist, I summarized the relevant issues. Firstly, the etiology of tumor is complex, and many patients hope that by taking one or several kinds of so-called particularly good supplements or nutrients or health care products, without any side effects, they can also control or eliminate the tumor. This is just a wonderful wish that cannot be realized in real life. Therefore, if someone recommends some health care products to you and says that they have cured many tumor patients, you must be vigilant, most likely you have met a fraud. As for Lingzhi spore powder, spirulina and other health care products, in the words of Director Lin, “If someone gives them to you, you should eat them; if you spend money on them, you are advised not to buy them”. Because they are health products, they have no medicinal effects, so they are in between available and not available. Secondly, for those nutritional products, I don’t recommend using individual nutrients for nutritional supplementation, such as protein powder alone and vitamin C. We have observed clinically that after applying protein powder alone for several times, patients will have thickened tongue and decreased appetite, which is in fact well explained, because when patients are weak, the spleen and stomach are not strong and the digestive function is weak. This is when pure protein powder is a great burden to the gastrointestinal tract and can easily cause indigestion. Although many family members and friends are well-intentioned and want more protein to boost immunity, protein powder that interferes with digestive function will not be absorbed at all and will cause some problems and symptoms instead. In TCM thinking, we need to choose appropriate foods and cooking methods according to the patient’s digestive ability, so that the patient can eat comfortably while the nutrients are absorbed, keeping the gastrointestinal tract working within the limits of its capacity and gradually returning to normal. In addition, the single-play nutritional supplementation model is not in line with the barrel theory generally accepted in nutrition – if the nutritional supplementation is unbalanced, the overall nutritional level is determined by the level of the most deficient nutrient. Thirdly, the diet of tumor patients should increase the intake of antioxidant foods in an appropriate amount under the principle of maintaining food diversity. It includes fresh fruits and vegetables, moderate amount of nuts, various kinds of mushrooms and so on. Patients should not overly avoid eating, otherwise it will cause imbalance of nutrient intake. Fourthly, clinically, we suggest tumor patients to avoid appropriate food, mainly hairy things such as mutton, dog meat, scaleless fish, leek, parsley and spring bamboo. We do not have many scientific experiments as a basis for the issue of avoidance of food, and further research is needed. However, the above foods are hairy items that have been emphasized by traditional Chinese medicine, and there are not many types of them, even if they are contraindicated, they will not affect the dietary balance very much. Although we do not know for sure whether they have adverse effects on tumors, we still abstain from eating them for insurance because of the traditional theory of TCM. Fifthly, we should also talk about foods that are not good for tumors, such as pickled foods that contain more nitrites, and barbecue foods that contain benzopyrene. These are not healthy foods, so it is better to eat less of them. Although these foods contain a small amount of carcinogenic ingredients, they are not toxic after all. If under special circumstances, such as after chemotherapy, the patient’s appetite is extremely low and he wants to eat a bite of pickled vegetables, there is no need to be too dogmatic, as eating them once in a while will not immediately trigger or aggravate cancer, just don’t eat them for a long time and often. Sixth, I need to emphasize that for some hormone-related diseases, such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, it is especially necessary to avoid the intake of estrogen and androgen, and the related foods are forest frog (also called snow clam), royal jelly, deer antler, etc. I hope these suggestions of mine will be helpful to tumor patients
