If a child’s eardrum is broken, if it is caused by trauma, try to avoid drops in the ear canal after the trauma and avoid water in the ear. You can take oral anti-inflammatory medication, such as cephalosporin or azithromycin, to prevent tympanic membrane infection. Go to the hospital once a week for a review to see how the eardrum is recovering. If the tympanic membrane is perforated due to otitis media, there will usually be purulent discharge, so you can use hydrogen peroxide to clean out the purulent discharge in the ear canal first. In addition, use anti-inflammatory ear drops, such as oxyfloxacin ear drops or levofloxacin ear drops, to do ear bath treatment. Oral anti-inflammatory medications such as cephalexin or azithromycin should also be taken to fight the infection. If it is the first episode of infection, the tympanic membrane will mostly heal on its own. If the infection is recurrent, the tympanic membrane may have difficulty healing and may be considered for elective tympanic membrane repair, mostly in adults.
