In principle, when the eardrum is broken, it must cause pain. It does not matter if it is caused by trauma or by inflammation, it will cause pain. Although the tympanic membrane is only a membrane, it is divided into three layers and is densely covered with blood vessels and nerves, so the pain is more obvious. If the tympanic membrane is perforated due to trauma, it is important to keep the external ear canal dry and prevent infection as much as possible, as more than 70% of traumatic tympanic membrane perforations are curable. If the tympanic membrane is perforated due to otitis media, it has more than half the chance of being cured if treated actively. If it does not heal for a long period of time, surgical treatment can only be considered and tympanic membrane repair can be done as soon as possible.
