The tympanic membrane is a membranous structure. When the ear is dug with inappropriate digging tools such as sharp instruments, or when the ear is dug too deeply, the tympanic membrane may be punctured, resulting in rupture and perforation of the tympanic membrane and ear pain and hearing loss.
