The need for medication in mild epilepsy should depend on the patient’s condition. For example, a one-time epileptic seizure, or a first seizure, is not mandatory for medication. If the patient is in a full-blown grand mal coma and the seizure lasts for a long time, the cause of the patient’s epilepsy needs to be identified. If the seizure is secondary to another disease causing the epilepsy, the primary cause needs to be addressed, and medication can be used at this time. If the patient has less frequent seizures, only 1-2 seizures in a year, preventive measures can be taken to prevent seizures, not necessarily direct use of antiepileptic drugs.
