On July 14, 2014, a patient with cervical cancer (hospitalization number: 69014), female, 57 years old, was transferred from an outside hospital. The patient was diagnosed with medium-differentiated squamous carcinoma of the cervix (stage II a) at the Cancer Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in early September 2013 due to “8 years of menopause and irregular vaginal bleeding for 2 days” and was given 3 cycles of chemotherapy with docetaxel + nedaplatin regimen, which went well. After treatment, the patient’s condition improved significantly, and surgery or radical radiotherapy was recommended but refused. In February 2014, the patient started to have pain in the lower abdomen and lower back, bilateral hip joints, and bilateral thigh roots, which was progressively worsening. In mid-July, the patient was admitted to the hospital for further treatment. The patient was diagnosed with intermediate differentiated squamous carcinoma of the cervix (stage III a), and was given radical radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy, as well as Chinese medicine treatment and conditioning. The patient is now under treatment. In this case, the patient’s stage progressed from early to mid-stage (stage IIa) to mid-to-late stage (stage IIIa), which inevitably affected the outcome and prognosis. Why did this happen? It lies in the patient’s wrong choice of TCM as the primary treatment at an inappropriate time. For cervical squamous carcinoma, such a choice is even more wrong! The first choice for some tumors is surgery, such as lung cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, etc. For some tumors, such as cervical cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer and other malignant tumors, the first choice may be surgery or radical radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy. For some elderly and frail patients or advanced malignant tumors that are not sensitive to radiotherapy, Chinese medicine can be chosen as the main treatment. Chinese medicine is not a panacea, as malignant tumor is a difficult or incurable disease in the field of Chinese medicine, and it can be seen that Chinese medicine is also powerless to treat malignant tumors that have reached a certain stage of development or some of them are progressing very fast! In the stage of rapid development of tumor, especially for patients who are sensitive to radiotherapy, they must choose radiotherapy without hesitation, and at the same time cooperate with TCM treatment and conditioning, never use TCM as the primary treatment. After the completion of radiotherapy, Chinese medicine can be used as the main treatment. In the process of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, if Chinese medicine can be used well, it can significantly reduce the toxic side effects and enhance the therapeutic effect, such as poor appetite, constipation or intractable diarrhea (including radioactive enteritis), fever, sore throat, sweating, dizziness and headache, bone marrow suppression, numbness of hands and feet, weakness, poor sleep and even pain can be well managed by Chinese medicine. At the same time, with Chinese medicine can better treat malignant tumors, this aspect of information, I will present in my Chinese medicine heavy dose evidence of treatment of the actual record.
