Amblyopia is a condition that occurs during the immature stage of visual development due to abnormal binocular interactions resulting in decreased visual acuity in one eye (e.g., strabismus) or in one/both eyes due to form deprivation (e.g., congenital cataract), without organic pathology on ocular examination, and in some cases is reversible with treatment. Simply put, amblyopia is a loss of best-corrected visual acuity in one or both eyes due to abnormal visual experiences during visual development. Amblyopia in children, if not detected early and treated promptly, can result in lifelong low vision and lack of perfect stereopsis.
