Recovery of a fracture at the base of the fifth metatarsal: First, external fixation with a cast or brace should be performed. The fixation effectively prevents displacement and stress reaction of the fracture and promotes healing of the fracture. Usually the fracture needs to be fixed for about 4-6 weeks, at which time it will be reviewed on film and it will be necessary to see if the fracture line is blurred and the clinical healing is initial. Secondly, if all is achieved, the cast can be removed and functional exercises of ankle flexion and extension can be performed. The strength, range and time of the activity should be gradually increased, with each day increasing the range and time of the activity compared to the previous day. The weight should be gradually increased, starting from 1/6 of the body weight at the beginning and gradually increasing until it returns to normal in about three months.
