Information for patients and families after facial muscle spasm surgery

Facial nerve root microvascular decompression surgery is the only effective method to eradicate facial spasm. This surgery has a small skin incision, does not damage brain tissue, and the patient recovers quickly after surgery and can be discharged in 5-7 days. Nevertheless, many patients have a natural fear of cranial surgery, and their families are very nervous and in a state of anxiety during and after surgery. I will briefly introduce the recovery of facial nerve root microvascular decompression surgery and precautions after surgery, so that you can be psychologically aware of the situation and avoid unnecessary tension. Shu Wei, Department of Functional Neurosurgery, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University 1. 1-3 days after surgery Patients just after surgery often return to our intensive care unit first and are closely observed for 1-2 days.      (1) Day of surgery In the functional neurosurgery ICU, watched over by our professional nurses; patients are often awake and usually do not need to eat, but need to rest and recuperate. All that the family needs outside the ward is to follow the nurse’s arrangement to provide the appropriate living items (tissues, mouth cups, potties, urine pads …… etc.).     (2) Day 1-2 after surgery On day 1-2 after surgery, the patient will usually have a follow-up cranial CT to observe the condition of the brain in order to adjust the treatment plan. Family members can accompany the patient for the examination and assist the staff in the transfer to improve the patient’s comfort.      Patients are ready to eat on the 1st day after surgery. Patients usually have a poor appetite and are also prone to constipation after cranial surgery, so a liquid-semi-liquid diet rich in protein and energy is appropriate (except for diabetic patients). Families can prepare milk (soy milk or rice soup for those who are intolerant to milk), fruit juice, congee or egg custard, etc. The food should not be too hot or too cold, 37 degrees Celsius to 39 degrees Celsius. At the same time, family members can prepare foods that facilitate digestion, bananas, yogurt, and soy products are recommended. In addition, please do not prepare foods with a short shelf life, such as lychee and watermelon. These foods are easy to breed bacteria after deterioration and affect recovery after consumption.2. Postoperative day 3-5 Patients gradually return to normal gastrointestinal function on the third day after surgery, and can often eat and drink normally, but avoid excessive amounts of food, and avoid stimulating food, too greasy and indigestible food.       Patients gradually return to normal at this stage and begin to gradually move down to the floor if there is no dizziness or headache in sitting position. Patients should still avoid loud speech, coughing, staying up late, etc. There was once a patient who was particularly excited after the original symptoms disappeared after surgery and stayed up late to watch a football game, resulting in a sudden brain hemorrhage. At this time, people still focus on more rest and moderate activity.       A small number of patients have symptoms such as fever and headache, please do not worry. There will be differences in recovery due to personal constitution, but all of them can recover well in 7-10 days under the doctor’s treatment. 3. 5-8 days after surgery Patients basically recover to normal after surgery, and those who recover well can be discharged already. If the surrounding environment is clean and hygienic, the dressing of the patient’s head incision can be removed within 1-2 days after the stitches are removed.4. 1 week-3 weeks after surgery In the following 1-3 weeks, the patient’s friend should keep the surgical incision dry. Some patients are overly cautious and cover the wound tightly, which leads to the growth of bacteria. We hope that you will keep the wound ventilated and tidy, and if there is discomfort, you can wipe it with an alcohol swab. Avoid forceful and violent pulling at the surgical site, and avoid using shampoo and hair dye in order to cause allergic reactions.       Very few patients have delayed rejection reactions, headache and fever at this stage. Please contact me promptly via internet, telephone or outpatient follow-up, early intervention will lead to faster and better recovery.5. 1 month after surgery Dr. Shu Wei would like to congratulate you that the cranial and skin conditions have returned to normal at this stage. You are ready to go back to your normal work and life. Please keep a stable mind and avoid overexertion and intense sports. This article is published with the authorization of Dr. Shu Wei.
