Chances of recurrence of non-functioning pituitary tumors

The chance of recurrence of non-functioning pituitary adenoma is around 5-10%, however, it also needs to be viewed on a case-by-case basis. For non-functional pituitary adenoma, if it is found relatively early, the growth is not particularly large, it does not break through the saddle septum, and the surgery is complete with no obvious pituitary tumor tissue remaining, the surgery is very smooth and there are no special changes in the condition, the recurrence rate is very low at the later stage, basically, only regular review is needed after doing so and there is usually no recurrence. However, if the non-functional pituitary tumor is found late, grows larger, breaks through the saddle septum, and even compresses the optic cross and internal carotid artery, causing some bony invasion, the chance of recurrence at a later stage is very high. Therefore, in some cases, further treatment by radiotherapy after surgery may also be required, and regular review must be performed if recurrence is detected.
