Can diabetics have cataract surgery?

Diabetic patients with stable blood glucose control are usually able to have cataract surgery. Patients with long-term diabetes have poor systemic and local resistance and are prone to co-infections, which are not conducive to surgical recovery. There are also some diabetic patients who have already combined retinopathy, if the blood sugar control is not good, it may increase intraoperative bleeding, slow wound healing after surgery and poor vision recovery. Diabetic patients who wish to undergo cataract surgery should strengthen the control and management of blood glucose and HbA1c concentration before surgery. Due to the large individual differences in diabetic patients’ conditions, regulation of blood glucose concentration should take into account the patient’s previous history of glycemic control and systemic conditions, as well as paying close attention to whether the patient has symptoms of hypoglycemia. Whether diabetic patients can undergo cataract surgery needs to be determined by specialized doctors according to their conditions.
