There are two major categories of antiepileptic drugs: i. Traditional medications. 1. phenytoin sodium, effective for generalized tonic-twin seizures or partial seizures. 2. carbamazepine, the drug of choice for partial seizures. 3. valproic acid, a broad-spectrum antiepileptic drug, preferred for generalized seizures. 4. phenobarbital, the drug of choice for pediatric epilepsy, broader spectrum. 5. paroxetine, same indications as phenobarbital. 6. ethosuximide, for The first choice is for simple aphasic seizures. The new antiepileptic drugs are: 1) Topiramate, 2) Lamotrigine, for refractory partial seizures and secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures. 3) Oxcarbazepine, with the same indications as carbamazepine, better tolerated. 4) Levetiracetam, for partial seizures with or without secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, myoclonic seizures, and pregabalin, gabapentin adjuvant therapy.
