Analysis of the medicine: This is a case of cough after an external fever, which is often seen in clinical practice. The patient had a cough for more than a month with little phlegm, chest tightness, breathlessness, and heavy breathing at night after the fever had subsided. It is accompanied by runny nose, aversion to cold, rales in the throat, thin pulse, pale tongue with white fur. The main treatment is to disperse the exterior evil and regulate the lung qi internally. In this formula, roasted ephedra and roasted loosestrife are used to regulate the lung qi, while almonds, white fruits and horehound astringently stop the cough. The almonds, white fruits and horehound astringent the lung to stop cough. Xin Yi and Cang Er Zi open the nasal passages. Deng Shan Long and Shi Wei relieve spasm and cough. The whole formula is pungent and calm, dispersing the surface cold externally and regulating the internal qi mechanism together to promote the lung and stop cough. After the medicine, the cough is reduced, but the cough is still white sputum, chest tightness, dyspnea, sweating, and thin pulse. To strengthen the effect of broadening the chest and dissolving phlegm and moving Qi, we added Hou Pu, Gua Pou Pei and Radix Platycodon, and removed Xin Yi, Cang Er Zi and Su Ye, which dispel the cold and open the orifice. By the third consultation, the patient’s cough was no longer obvious, but the manifestation of qi deficiency was prominent, with chest tightness, atrophy, thin pulse, and pale tongue with white fur. Raw Astragalus, Radix Codonopsis, Fried Atractylodes and Poria benefit the Qi and strengthen the spleen, while Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Rehmanniae Sinensis, Radix Ziziphi, Radix Paeoniae Alba. Chuanxiong nourishes blood and tonifies deficiency. Hou Pu and Chen Pi move Qi and resolve phlegm. Licorice and Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum nourish Yin and replenish Blood. The symptoms improved after the medicine, and the treatment effect continued to be consolidated at the fourth consultation, because Hou Pei moves Qi and consumes Qi should not be used for a long time, instead, Huang Jing tonifies Qi, strengthens the spleen and benefits the kidneys, and tonifies Qi and nourishes Yin together with the effect of tonifying Qi and nourishing deficiency.
