Treatment of secretory otitis media

Secretory otitis media is an inflammatory lesion of the middle ear characterized by fluid accumulation in the middle ear and hearing loss. There are two types of otitis media: acute and chronic. The principles of treatment for this disease are removal of middle ear fluid, improvement of middle ear ventilation and drainage, and etiologic treatment. 1.Non-surgical treatment includes: antibiotics or other anti-infective treatment, glucocorticoid treatment, 1% ephedrine or 1% ephedrine alternating with beclomethasone dipropionate aerosol nasal drops three to four times a day, pharyngeal tube blowing (pinch nasal puff method, Bo’s ball method or catheter method can be used to do pharyngeal tube blowing, adults can still blow prednisolone into the pharyngeal pharyngeal opening via catheter.) 2.Surgical treatment: For light pediatric patients with a short history of the disease, especially if they have the disease in one ear, non-surgical treatment can be done under the close attention of a physician in order to discharge and absorb the middle ear fluid on their own. If internal treatment is not effective, surgical treatment should be performed to remove the fluid and improve the ventilation and drainage of the middle ear. The common surgical methods include tympanocentesis, tympanotomy, tube placement, and adenoidectomy. 3. Etiological treatment: For recurrent otitis media, including unilateral acute otitis media in adults, in addition to active treatment of the disease itself, it is more important to carefully search for the cause and carry out active etiological treatment. When symptoms of acute secretory otitis media appear, you should visit the otolaryngology department of a regular hospital, except for other diseases, and then actively carry out treatment.
