After an injury, especially after a large burn, the scar in the injured area may become raised and accompanied by itching. Severe itching can cause sleep and food disturbance and pain to the patient. The traditional approach used to be limited to topical anti-scar medication with compression with an elastic bandage, but usually with little success for severe itching. The itching would not be relieved until the scar stabilized and softened over several years. With advances in technology, plasma technology offers hope for these patients suffering from scratching. This technique alters the collagen arrangement of the scar (collagen is the building block of scars) and peels away the thickened scar, resulting in a softer and flatter scar. By embolizing the capillaries, the red color of the scar is diminished or disappears. With the embolization of blood vessels, the scar loses its nutritional supply of blood and the momentum of proliferation is reduced. Clinical practice has shown that many patients experience significant relief of itching symptoms after a single treatment. Not only that, early treatment of the injury with plasma can also reduce the degree of scar proliferation and improve the appearance of the scar, saving some patients from having to undergo another surgery.
