Whenever you search the internet and newspapers and magazines for such difficult and serious illnesses as cancer, you will be inundated with the descendants of imperial doctors and ancestral secret recipes, which smells like a lingering money scam. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to be able to study under a true heir to the imperial family – Professor Ling Yao Xing and did not have to suffer from this confusion. Ling is now 93 years old and is the 16th descendant of Ling Yun, the imperial physician of the Ming Dynasty (recorded in the Ming Dynasty, History of the Ming Dynasty, Listed as No. 187). In his later years, Dr. Ling compiled two books, “Secrets of Chinese Medicine for Cancer Treatment” and “Chronology of 130 Cases of Chinese Medicine for Difficult Diseases”, and after his retirement, Dr. Ling treated mostly cancer patients, and I was one of the few of Dr. Ling’s students who were engaged in oncology. During these ten years of studying with Ling, I was often asked: “You are considered as Ling’s disciple, did he pass any secret recipe to you? To paraphrase the line of Xiao Shen Yang, “I really don’t have this one”, but I do have a secret. The secret of Ling’s cancer treatment is actually not mysterious at all, just four words: “attack, supplement, regulate and guide”. (In fact, the secret is Ling’s experience in treating cancer by applying the theory of Huang Di Nei Jing. Ling believed that cancer is a curable disease, and the most important thing for cancer is holistic treatment. Nowadays, when it comes to TCM for cancer treatment, people either treat TCM as a placebo for a dead horse or kneel down and beg for a magic pill from heaven and worship TCM as a bodhisattva. But I don’t know that the reason why TCM has advantages over Western medicine in many aspects is that the wisdom of TCM in treating cancer is based on the special philosophical ideas of TCM (such as the holistic concept and discriminatory treatment like those from the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine), so TCM has richer treatment tools than Western medicine, and through the combination of four diagnoses, TCM can evaluate the physical condition of patients more accurately than Western medicine. An old woman with gynecological tumor and metastasis in her abdomen was operated on by a Western doctor, and her abdomen was closed when she was opened. This is the imbalance of physiological functions mentioned in the Internal Canon, and the word “tune” is used to adjust the balance of yin and yin. With oral and external application of Chinese medicine, the abdomen is not distended, the stool is passed, the appetite is good, the yin and yin are balanced, and the person is refreshed. But is this the way to cure the tumor? Of course not, the treatment of tumor is not that simple, if the doctor is only complacent at this time, the tumor will give you a good look soon. The purpose of “adjustment” is to lay the foundation for “attack” in one step. How to attack? To find some herbal medicine to fight poison with poison? There is no need to do so, as many cancer treatment methods in western medicine can be used (Ling was over 90 years old and did not reject modern western medicine, let alone my generation). I chose a treatment with fewer side effects for the patient – interventional chemotherapy. The tumor was under control. But after chemotherapy, people are weak again, “tonic” it. In Chinese medicine, there are certainly no shortage of means to supplement deficiency and improve immunity. Since the tumor is stable, the effect of supplementation is naturally good. One is “guidance”. Tumor patients have more or less emotional problems, so doctors should pay attention to emotional guidance so that patients will better cooperate with treatment; the other is “guidance”. The second is “guide”, appropriate exercise is beneficial to tumor recovery. In this way, the four words of the secret take turns, the original thought to live no more than three months of advanced tumor patients, now has lived well for nearly two years, usually can still do housework on the street to buy vegetables. Finally, I have compiled Ling’s cancer treatment tips into a few words for everyone’s reference: cancer is a stubborn disease, which cannot be overcome by non-attack; cancer is a miscellaneous disease, which cannot be pacified by non-tuning; cancer is easily deficient, which cannot be cured by non-supplementation; cancer is easily depressed, which cannot be smoothed by non-guidance.
