Scleral blueness is a non-specific ocular condition and can be caused by many diseases.
The most common eye disease is sclerochalasis, but systemic diseases such as osteogenesis imperfecta and iron deficiency anaemia can also present with blue sclera. When a patient finds themselves or their parents notice a blue sclera, they can first go to the ophthalmology department for a slit lamp examination to determine if they have sclerochoroiditis, and if not an eye disease, they can then go to the appropriate department based on other symptoms or signs for a clear diagnosis and active treatment.
