Egg fertilization is a complex process and the mechanisms involved in the entire process of fertilization are not yet fully understood by scientific research. What is known about the fertilization process includes the egg to mature, the sperm to be energized, the acrosome reaction to occur and cross the egg zona pellucida, the fusion of the sperm with the egg membrane, the cortical reaction of the egg, the resumption of meiosis in the egg, and the formation of a double male and female protoplast. A problem in any of these processes can lead to failure of fertilization. In IVF technology, possible causes of egg non-fertilization include immature eggs, eggs that are mature but of questionable quality, and abnormal sperm morphology and function, thus affecting one or more of the above fertilization processes.
