Senile leukemia is not an “incurable disease”

Geriatric leukemia refers to leukemia patients over 60 years of age, is a malignant disease originating from hematopoietic stem cells, with the aging of society, the incidence of geriatric leukemia is also increasing year by year, of which patients aged 60-69 years account for more than 70% of geriatric leukemia, most patients are in poor general condition, combined with heart, liver, kidney and other important organ diseases are common, about 30% of patients have a history of MDS before the onset of leukemia. About 30% of patients have a history of MDS before the onset of leukemia. Leukemia often involves earlier stages of hematopoietic stem cells and is often accompanied by cytogenetic abnormalities with poor prognosis and a poor prognosis. Compared to adults, acute leukemia in the elderly has a relatively slow and insidious onset, with anemia as the main symptom and other symptoms less common. However, there are patients with rapid onset and severe disease, often combined with anemia, bleeding, infection and other symptoms. Some elderly people have hypoproliferative leukemia, with reduced blood cells and low bone marrow proliferation. Due to the poor physical condition of the elderly, and often combined with other systemic diseases, treatment is relatively difficult, there is no uniform treatment guidelines for the treatment of leukemia in the elderly at home and abroad, requiring doctors to have extensive clinical experience, according to the patient’s condition, using individualized treatment. For elderly people without underlying diseases and in good general condition, they can be treated with reduced-dose chemotherapy or “microtransplantation” techniques, such as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, if they are under 65 years old and conditions permit. For older people with more underlying diseases or poor organ function, low-dose chemotherapy can be considered to reduce tumor load, improve quality of life and prolong survival; in recent years, immunotherapy has also been applied to treat elderly leukemia with certain efficacy, and there are many methods of immunotherapy, such as DC-CIK, CAR T and other methods. In the end, if you find out that you have leukemia, the elderly should not easily give up treatment, do not think that they have no hope of cure when they are older, as long as they actively cooperate with the doctor’s treatment, they can still get a good prognosis.
