There are 12 pairs of intercostal nerves, which emanate from the thoracic medulla and then unite via anterior and posterior roots. The thoracic nerves are divided into anterior, posterior, spinal and traffic branches. The anterior branch is located between the medial and lateral intercostal muscles called the intercostal nerve and travels on the painful side of the chest wall below the intercostal artery.
