This is really a question of concern to patients, but one that is difficult to answer simply. If we measure the probability of serious complications, artificial knee replacement is less than 1%, which is low risk and safe compared to many other surgical procedures. If we use patient satisfaction as a measure of success, then different research centers have reported that patient satisfaction 1 year after surgery is roughly 80% to 98%, and many patients come in for replacement surgery on the other side after having surgery on one side. In addition, I would like to emphasize that the artificial knee is not a perfect joint, let alone a product comparable to a 20-year-old joint, and that the surgery is considered successful when the patient’s pain is relieved and most of the normal function is restored.
