What is laparoscopic splenectomy?

Splenectomy was once a major surgery in general surgery, and the extent of the surgical trauma could be imagined only from the surgical scar on the patient’s stomach. Now, with the advancement of minimally invasive surgical techniques, splenectomy is routinely performed laparoscopically in experienced hospitals. This is an unprecedented boon for ITP patients (the majority of whom are young and middle-aged female patients). The surgical wound is reduced from 20-30 cm to three small incisions of less than 1 cm and one incision of 3-5 trauma for taking specimens, and with modern cosmetic suturing techniques, patients who recover well after surgery can hardly be seen to have undergone surgery.
