Tips to prevent myopia

Tips to prevent myopia: Ensuring that children and adolescents spend one to two hours outdoors every day can effectively prevent the onset and control the progression of myopia. Asia Pacific Eye Health Week is held in October every year, and this year, October 5-11 is the fifth Asia Pacific Eye Health Week, and the theme of this year’s event is “Myopia in Children”. Therefore, we, the Strabismus and Pediatric Ophthalmology Group of the Chinese Academy of Ophthalmology, are actively promoting the campaign of “Reduce myopia by enhancing outdoor activities for one hour a day” to do our part for the eye health of children and adolescents in China. Myopia has become a common phenomenon among children nowadays. As we all know, myopia is due to the influence of genetic factors and environmental factors, and the influence of environmental factors is becoming more and more significant. The prevalence of myopia among children and adolescents has been increasing. At present, there are more than 400 million myopia patients in China, and with a population of 1.3 billion, about 1 in 3 people are myopic, especially the proportion of myopia among adolescents is as high as 90%, and myopia is becoming younger and the proportion of high myopia is increasing, the risk of vitreous clouding, retinal detachment and even blindness caused by myopia, especially high myopia, will also increase. One of the purposes of medical research is to understand diseases, treat them and control their progress, but a more important purpose of medical research should be to prevent diseases before they happen. Therefore, it is urgent to pay attention to the visual health of children and adolescents in China and to strengthen the prevention and treatment of myopia in primary and secondary school students. Most myopia can be reduced and its development prevented by taking active preventive measures. A number of studies at home and abroad have shown that sunlight is very beneficial to the normal development and function of children and adolescents’ eyes, and that strengthening outdoor activities for 1 to 2 hours a day for school-age children and adolescents can effectively prevent the occurrence of myopia and control its progression. So parents, kindergarten and school teachers, let’s work together! Please take your children outdoors so that they can have more time to get close to nature, feel the warmth of the sun, the breeze and the scent of birds and flowers, and at the same time have a pair of healthy and bright eyes, effectively reducing the risk of myopia.
