What is the effect of the mortal medicine “Luk Yi San”?

As a good remedy to dispel summer heat, “Liuyi San” is one of the essential medicines for families in summer, and it is also known as the “fairy medicine for mortals” because of its low price and excellent effect. It is made up of six parts of talc and one part of licorice, and is simple to make, as the ratio of the two herbs is six to one. According to legend, “Liuyi San” was created by Liu Wansu (alias Liu Heshan), one of the four major medical practitioners during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. It was in the mid-summer of the first year of the Golden Emperor’s reign (1147 AD), when King Xizong promoted Han Qi Xian, the right chancellor of the Shang Shu, to be the King of Pu and gave a three-day banquet. Who knows, not out of three days, but Han Qi Xian got a strange disease, suddenly fever, thirst, restlessness, urine, diarrhea. The family sought medical help everywhere, and Xizong also sent a doctor to come to the clinic, but nearly a hundred doses of medicine down, the disease continues to increase, so the city gate hanging list for medical treatment. Liu Wansu, who was 20 years old at that time, was buying medicine in the capital, and when he saw the list, firstly, he was a novice and did not know the depth; secondly, he thought he had a good grasp of the disease; thirdly, he had heard that Han Qixian was well versed in scriptures and rules, and could make new laws of the imperial system after the laws of Song, so Liu Wansu was eager to see this wise minister. Therefore, he unveiled the list and entered the royal residence to treat Han Qixian. After checking his pulse and color, he asked, “Do you have any symptoms of body heat, heart trouble, thirst, dizziness, little breath, and excessive sweating?” Han closed his eyes while nodding slightly. “When there is nausea and diarrhea, chest tightness and dullness, tiredness and heavy body.” Liu Wansu said. “Yes, yes!” Han enterprise first said, at this time opened his eyes to measure Liu Wansu’s appearance. “This is summer dampness, treating summer heat without treating dampness, the doctor’s fault!” “Summer dampness?” The doctor could not help but say, “We do not know the theory of heat and humidity?” Liu Wansu said, “You treat heat and dispel dampness, diarrhea heat does not nourish the yin, especially urinary inconvenience, diarrhea, certainly do not dare to use the cold agent, so the treatment and ineffective.” Han Qi Xian stood up and opened his eyes wide and asked, “What do you have?” Liu Wansu pondered for a while and raised his pen to prescribe talc, licorice, finely ground together. Mrs. Han asked, “What is this prescription?” Liu pointed to the formula “six taels of talc, one tael of licorice” and blurted out: “six-one san”. He explained, “Slippery stone can relieve muscle and clear heat, slide the orifice to move water and relieve dampness, and rule the three jiao in the upper and lower parts of the body. Adding licorice to relieve fire and harmonize the middle, it can clear summer heat and dampness.” “How do I take it?” “Each with three money, and a little white honey, cold boiled water or lamp heart soup mix, three days to see the effect.” Han Qi Xian saw that he had a point, so he took three patches according to the prescription, and really urine and diarrhea stop, can not help but feel a lot of emotion. Han Qi Xian came to Liu Wan Su and asked him to give up medicine and join politics, but Liu Wan Su only asked for some medical books. After that, he still studied hard and finally became a famous doctor of his generation. Li Shizhen, a great medical scientist of the Ming Dynasty, also praised the “six one san” and believed that its main treatment of summer dampness is because talc has the function of clearing heat and dampness and improving thirst; licorice has the function of nourishing yin and clearing heat, cooling blood and stopping bleeding, which is really “an immortal medicine for mortals”. So, when do you need to take Liu Yi San? After heatstroke, there are definitely symptoms of elevated body temperature, fever, or what Chinese medicine calls “fire”, i.e. heat symptoms; and due to the loss of body fluids, there are often symptoms of dehydration such as thirst and drinking; and symptoms such as low volume of urine, hot pain, yellow color and even closed urine; if the heat and dampness hurt the stomach and intestines, there are also symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea. When three of the above symptoms occur, consider taking Liu Yi San. The key is to determine whether there is also the symptom of red and yellow short urine, if the urine is clear and long (colorless and easy to discharge) should not be used. Generally, the best effect is to take it with cool water. In addition, the addition of some other Chinese herbs to Liu Yi San is also very effective. For example, if the heart is troubled, you can add a little bit of cinnabar and take it as “Yi Yuan San”; if the eyes are red, sore throat, sores on the tongue, you can add a little bit of Qing Dai and take it as “Bi Yu San”; if there is also a slight external fever, headache and other symptoms, you can use fresh mint leaf decoction or pounded juice and take it as “Yi Yuan San”.
