A common cause of schistosomal colorectal cancer

This is a pathological section of a flattened and raised mucosa removed by colonoscopy, and many schistosome eggs can be seen in the inner layer of the intestinal wall. He had a single inflammatory polyp removed 5 years ago at an outside hospital and 4 years later colon cancer was found with a tumor depth of T2 and a large number of schistosome eggs in the tumor. In the absence of his obvious colitis, he was prepared to give a colonoscopy review every 3 years in the hope of not allowing the recurrent colon tumor to enter the progressive stage again. The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin in China used to be an endemic area for schistosomiasis, but after years of preventive treatment and thanks to advances in sanitation, the epidemic has been effectively controlled in recent years. The scientific name of schistosomes in China is Schistosoma japonicum, which is due to the fact that the biologist who identified and classified this schistosome was Japanese. Schistosoma japonicum is found in the veins between the gastrointestinal tract and the liver and is most notable for causing liver fibrosis, ascites, splenomegaly, dilatation of the esophagogastric veins and hemorrhage, among other diseases. In fact, Schistosoma japonicum also causes colitis and colorectal cancer, and because the absolute number of these diseases is not high and not supported by national policies, the awareness rate in infected areas is not high, so many people are not aware of regular checkups, which can lead to delayed diagnosis of tumors.
