What is otolithiasis?

Otolithiasis is the most common disease that causes vertigo, and it is now more and more widely known. We often hear patients say that one day when they turn over in bed, they suddenly get dizzy and the sky spins around, and it feels like the bed is turning over. Such a performance is likely to be suffering from otoliths. When you have the following symptoms, it indicates that you may have otolithiasis: you feel dizzy when you do a certain action or several actions, usually when you get up or lie down, when you turn over, when you lower or raise your head, when you turn your head; the duration of dizziness is very short, a few seconds or ten seconds, and the longest duration is usually not more than 1 or 2 minutes; it can be accompanied by nausea or vomiting, not accompanied by tinnitus (if the existing tinnitus does not increase when you have dizziness), and it has no effect on your hearing. Sometimes the attacks are better after a few days or even after only 1 or 2 episodes, and sometimes not even after 1 month or more. What should I do if I suspect that I have otolaryngitis? You should go to a hospital’s vertigo clinic or ENT clinic to see a professional doctor for diagnosis. It is best to go to a hospital that can perform nystagmography (or nystagmography view) and vestibular function tests to make a clear diagnosis, and depending on your case, you may also need to undergo head CT, MRI, and cerebral blood flow tests to rule out neurological diseases. The most effective treatment for otolithiasis is otolith repositioning manipulation, and some patients may need some medication as well. According to the statistics of Beijing Hospital Vertigo Clinic, the efficiency of otolith repositioning treatment is over 90%, and some patients can be relieved of their pain in one treatment. What should I pay attention to after otolith repositioning treatment? The otolith may come off again after the reset treatment, so you should avoid sleeping on the affected side for 2-3 days after the treatment, try to lie down or lie flat on the opposite side of the otolith, avoid fast and large head movements, such as jerking your head down, lifting your head, turning your head or playing strenuous sports, and pay attention to rest to avoid strain. Some patients may feel dizzy or dizzy within 2 weeks after the resetting treatment, and walk a bit drifting, which is also a follow-up reaction after the resetting treatment and is normal. If significant vertigo occurs again, it may be a recurrence of otoliths, so go to the hospital in time to see a doctor, and if it is clear that it is a recurrence of otoliths, reset treatment can be performed again.
