What is carotid artery plaque

Carotid artery plaque is a fibrous plaque that occurs in the intima of the carotid artery. The carotid artery is the most important blood supply artery to the brain. Carotid plaque ruptures or directly blocks the lumen, affecting the blood supply to the brain, thus causing acute cerebral infarction, which can be disabling or fatal. Therefore, screening for carotid plaque is very important.
