Swelling around the eye caused by eye trauma usually subsides in about 7-10 days. The tissues around the eye are relatively loose, and localized swelling and bruising can occur quickly after eye trauma. Cold compresses are recommended within 24-48 hours after the injury to avoid aggravation of swelling; hot compresses can be applied after 48 hours of injury to accelerate local blood circulation and to keep the swelling subsiding. Generally after 7-10 days, the local swelling will gradually subside, while patients can take oral ibuprofen capsules and apply topical Furtalin ointment to effectively relieve pain, or take oral Chinese medicines such as Panax ginseng tablets and Shenyang red herbs to activate blood circulation and remove blood stasis, and topical Yunnan Baiyao can also accelerate the subside of swelling and promote wound healing. In addition, severe facial trauma may be accompanied by skull base fracture, which may manifest as “panda eyes”, dizziness, headache, etc. Therefore, patients are advised to undergo cranial CT examination to avoid delaying treatment.
