  I. What is high blood pressure High blood pressure means that the pressure in your arteries is constantly in the high range. High blood pressure can cause strokes, heart attacks, heart failure or kidney failure.  Blood pressure comes from the force of blood pressing against the walls of blood vessels. There are 2 values that indicate blood pressure. The higher value is the pressure when the heart contracts, also called systolic pressure. The lower number is the pressure when the heart is diastolic between 2 heart contractions, also called diastolic blood pressure.  Normal blood pressure in adults should be less than 120/80 mm Hg. When it is ≥140/90 mm Hg, it is considered high blood pressure. When the blood pressure is 120-140/80-90mmHg, it is a pre-hypertension state. At this point, lifestyle changes are needed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. To better control blood pressure, try to do the following: 1. lose weight; 2. eat a healthy diet, low salt, low fat, low saturated fat, low cholesterol; 3. eat enough fruits and vegetables; 4. exercise more; 5. limit alcohol to no more than 2drink per day for men and no more than 1 for women; 6. take your medication as prescribed by your doctor; 7. know your blood pressure and keep it at a normal level.  Control of blood pressure is a long-term task, long-term maintenance of normal blood pressure, help reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular disease.
