Chinese medicine treatment of cough in pregnancy

What should I do if I suddenly have a cough after a transplant/just tested pregnant? Recently, many patients feel anxious about this and the number of outpatient visits for cough has increased. Today, we would like to briefly explain the Chinese medicine treatment for sudden coughing before and after embryo transfer or during pregnancy. A detailed account of coughing is found in the Treatise on the Origin of Diseases, Volume 42, which states that “coughing occurs when the lungs feel a slight cold and the cold injures the lungs” and points out that “those who become ill during pregnancy do not stop for a long time and are injured in the fetus. “This indicates that the ancients already recognized the adverse effects of cough on embryonic development. Loss of treatment of prolonged cough in pregnancy can easily damage fetal energy, resulting in fetal movement such as lumbago, abdominal pain, and abdominal cramps, and even abortion and miscarriage. The main mechanism of this disease is the loss of moistening of the lung and the failure of purification. It is often caused by yin deficiency, phlegm and external sensation. Yin deficiency is especially acute after pregnancy, when Yin blood is gathered in the lungs to nourish the fetus, and when Yin deficiency is exuberant, the deficiency fire is inflamed, burning the lungs and injuring the fluids, the lungs lose their moistening and purification functions, resulting in cough. 2. Phlegm and phlegm drink The weakness of the spleen and stomach, the excessive consumption of cold and cold after pregnancy, the incompetence of transportation and transformation, the internal stagnation of water and dampness, the accumulation of dampness into phlegm, and the overriding of the lungs. 3. External sensation Careless living and living during pregnancy, external sensation of wind and cold, or the weakness of the pregnant woman’s body and the lack of density of the couples make her susceptible to wind and cold, and the external evil offends the lungs, which causes the lungs to lose their circulation, resulting in cough. The first step is to understand the urgency of the onset of the cough, the length of the illness, and the characteristics of the cough, and at the same time to analyze the evidence, tongue and pulse in order to determine the type of evidence and treatment. The main treatment method is to clear heat and moisten the lung, resolve phlegm and stop cough. Since the cough occurs after embryo transfer or during pregnancy, treatment should be combined with treatment to calm the fetus, with reasonable combination and careful application of drugs that lower qi and smooth the flow of Qi. (I) Yin deficiency type Main symptoms: coughing without stopping, dry cough without sputum, or even cough with blood, dry mouth and throat, heat in the hands and feet, red tongue, little coating, and thin and slippery pulse. The main treatment is to nourish Yin and moisten the lung, stop coughing and calm the fetus. Commonly used drugs include Radix Rehmanniae, Mai Dong, Bai Shao, Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng, Radix Platycodon, Radix Glycyrrhiza Uralensis, Radix Aconiti, etc. If necessary, it can be combined with Phellodendron Leaf, Herba Cistanches, and Rhizoma Huxley. (2) Phlegm-drinking type Main symptoms: cough with excessive phlegm, chest tightness and shortness of breath, or even wheezing without lying down, fatigue and dullness, white and greasy coating, moist and smooth pulse. The main treatment is to strengthen the spleen and remove dampness, resolve phlegm and stop cough. Commonly used drugs include Atractylodes macrocephala, Poria, Radix Codonopsis, Radix Panax notoginseng, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhiza Glabra, Scutellaria baicalensis, Morinda citrifolia, Phellodendron and so on. (3) External sensation type Main symptoms: cough with thin sputum, stuffy nose and runny nose, headache and vicious cold, aching bones, thin white fur and slippery pulse. The main treatment is to dispel wind and cold, promote the lung and stop cough. Commonly used drugs include asparagus, mandarin, perilla, ephedra, licorice, etc. In clinical practice, the symptoms of cough do not necessarily match the above descriptions, and the evidence patterns may be complex, sometimes “just one evidence is present” and sometimes “all the evidence is present”. Do not take medication without permission. In general, if a cough occurs during an IVF cycle, it is important to take care of the fetus at the same time, i.e., to treat the disease and the fetus at the same time.
