A vegetative person can swallow passively but will not eat actively, so a vegetative person who eats passively is also a vegetative person. Vegetative person is known as persistent vegetative state in medicine, which refers to persistent consciousness disorder due to severe traumatic brain injury, ischemia and hypoxia of central nervous system, and degenerative neuron disease. The patient loses the ability to recognize himself and his surroundings, and has completely lost the ability to take care of himself. However, the vegetative person can still retain some basic functions for survival, such as being able to breathe on their own, open and close their eyes, swallow, vomit, urinate and defecate, etc., but these are all unconscious. For example, the patient’s swallowing is only reflexive, but unconscious. The patient’s bowel movements are also not controlled by him/herself. A small part of plants will show signs of awakening, but if the patient only shows passive eating, then he/she still belongs to the vegetative state. Of course, the family can contact the doctor for an evaluation if they see signs of regaining consciousness to determine if it is a sign of awakening.
