In the past or when I was a kid I basically never heard of anyone around me getting cancer, and if I heard of anyone getting cancer it was like a news flash —– that family would be famous very quickly. But now that people are not surprised by cancer, is this a good thing. Some people think that the high incidence of cancer has something to do with the advances in modern medicine, the use of advanced screening instruments and people’s increased awareness of medical checkups, and I don’t think I can deny that. However, I am increasingly aware of the fact that environmental and dietary factors are increasingly involved in the high incidence of cancer. In the 1960s, Japan experienced a high incidence of cancer during its rapid economic development. The current situation in China is very similar, so I can’t help but worry that cancer is becoming more and more common. I remember that a young kidney and bladder cancer patient asked me in great bewilderment, “Dr. Chen, my living conditions are fine, why did I get this disease so young?” I could not give him a very satisfactory answer. I could not give him a very satisfactory answer. It was not appropriate to explain the mechanism of cancer to them from the cellular and molecular level. I can only explain why more and more cancers are occurring from a macro, systems biology perspective. At the clinic on Sunday, I saw two cancer patients, one of whom was a relative of our doctor. When I told them that the CT results were 95% suggestive of malignant kidney cancer, they were both very shocked, and it was almost as if the sky was falling. I do understand that if a family or an individual has cancer, their outlook on life, family arrangements, relationships around their children and parents, their daily routines, and even the arrangement and disposal of their property will all be completely different. And let’s not even talk about the suffering that the patient will endure. More and more cancer patients, more and more people and families are experiencing suffering, but society is still a prosperous scene, all this should trigger us to think a lot!
