Can children with epilepsy go to school or not?

It is time for school-age children to choose to enter school, but there is such a group of parents who often wander to the entrance of the campus because their children are diagnosed with febrile convulsions, pediatric epilepsy, some have been taking medication, families have been worried whether such children can receive normal education, whether school will aggravate the seizures? Epilepsy is a common chronic disease of the nervous system, with about 60% starting in infancy and early childhood. Early diagnosis and reasonable treatment can achieve good control in about 80% of children, and benign epilepsy in children accounts for about 15% to 24% of childhood epilepsy. The prognosis for febrile convulsions and benign epilepsy in children is good, and intellectual development is generally unaffected. Epilepsy is not the same as mental retardation, and epilepsy itself does not affect the child’s schooling. About 75% of children with epilepsy can go to school normally, and going to school will not aggravate the seizures, but will help to narrow the gap with normal children to better integrate into society. As parents should treat their children with epilepsy correctly, although there are many factors that can trigger seizures in daily life, such as fatigue, staying up late, sleepiness, etc., many families are worried that the brain will aggravate the seizures in school, overprotection, excessive substitution, restriction of activities, neglect of learning, if the school-age children out of the school environment for a long time will not be conducive to the development of children’s physical and mental health, and will cause unhealthy This is not a good idea. Benign epilepsy in children usually resolves spontaneously around puberty, and only about 2% of children with benign epilepsy will have a mutation, some even take medication for life. In other types of epilepsy, if the seizures are controlled and there is no serious intellectual disability, the child can be enrolled in school. It is recommended that parents, on the one hand, identify behavioral problems in their children’s daily education and correct them; on the other hand, consult a professional neuropsychologist to give scientific guidance. What if the child has a generalized convulsion at school? This is a concern for many parents and teachers. Experts remind: most seizures or fever convulsions are the body’s own protective function of emergency play and automatically stop, generally as long as the patient’s body position flat, loosen the collar, keep the airway open, air circulation, the child’s head to the side can be, if 5 minutes still can not be self-stopped, should be sent to the nearest hospital rescue. In simple terms, parents should pay attention to the following points for these children to attend school: 1. These children are generally on medication and should consult with a professional neurologist on how to rationalize the timing of medication; 2. If the seizures are not well controlled, the child should first control the seizures before choosing to go to school, which is the best policy.
